So I was browsing the web the other day trying to figure out when lightweight favorite (Huerta) was going to be back in action after his lost to Eddie in late October. I found some rather entertaining information that I would like to shed some light on…
Roger has been training Muy Thai in Thailand, appropriately named ;D part of his training has added swimming to his agenda for cardio and I assume rrcreation as well. Turns out that on December 7th Huerta was free-swimming when he noticed a little girl out in the surf. She was by herself and being pulled out by the current. Roger retrieved the little girl, dragged her to shore and provided CPR until the paramedics could get there. Huerta has always appealed to me as a fighter and as a person due to his humbleness and easy-going attitude but this takes the cake. Coupled with his act of chivalry last year, Huerta is making a name for himself in and outside the octogon. I know that him and Dana have had problems in the past but the guys got it all! He’s the future of the sport and he’s a role model for people everywhere.

There wasn’t tons of attention on this incident because it took place outside of the states. As far as I know the source is legit and ahould be treated as such until proven otherwise.

The Weigh-Ins (Rights of the UFC)

Yeah I know its old news but I just ran across this fight and remembered all the hype. So here’s what I think.

1st Round: During the first round Huerta pushed the pace and came out with some strong leg kicks to Florian’s low and mid-section. He also made attempts at his favored faint to Superman punch combination. Florian managed a takedown and later mananged to get his back. However, Huerta was able to push through Florian’s rear guard and escape the bottom postion. Once Huerta brought the fight back to the feet he utilized the cage to try and open up Florian. Huerta’s gameplan seemed to be to push the pace and keep the distance close for a KO or the possible takedown and patented ground and pound. Florian’s gameplan during the first round was to remain distant from Huerta, go for the takedown and put Florian Jujitsu to work. He maintianed his distance and did not manage to capitalize enough to win the round.

2nd Round: Prior to round 2 Kenny’s corner told him to up the ante in response to Huerta’s aggression. This was shown in the second round where we see a more aggressive Florian willing to trade with Huerta. Florian attempts another takedown that results in more of a scap that ends with Huerta standing back up. Another takedown attempt almost gets Florian tied up in a Kamora by Huerta. Huerta loosens to reign down on Kenny with numerous elbows. Huerta’s slight release gives Florian his needed room to pull out of the Kamora as well as Roger’s back. However Huerta spends little time in the bottom position before slipping out. There is some exchanging leg kicks before the round ends.

3rd and Final Round: Before the third Kenny is encouraged by his corner “Get on this kid! Jump on this kid! Don’t let him steal this from you!” Florian comes out much more aggressive and lands a left straight kick right on Huerta’s chin. He follows up with a connecting knee and flying knee combo. Huerta all the while lands most of his attacks but they are sparse. The fight goes the distance and to the judges scorecards for a decision. Huerta’s  involvement in the first two rounds were not enough to win over the judges after Kenny’s performance in the third.

My 2 cents: In my opinion Huerta threw WAY too many superman punch attempts. With a move like the superman punch it is too easily telegraphed and should be held on reserve to catch an unsuspecting or pre-injured opponent. He pushed the pace all three rounds but that also caused him to sustain some damage from Kenny’s deadly elbows. I’m sure coming off of 6 back to back wins in the UFC he wanted this to be another BANG. But truthfully if he had not focused as much on finishing the fight spectacularlly, he showed that he could handle Florian’s ground game and in my opinon could have taken the three rounds on points.

Florian with a High Kick (Rights of the UFC)

Huerta Grounds and Pounds Alberto Crane (Rights of the UFC)

On July 31st Roger Huerta, former UFC lightweight contender, was involved in a street fight outside a bar around 2 AM in Austin, Texas. The incident was reported by TMZ and leaked to Youtube sometime later. See link below for video. In the video, Huerta is seen exchanging words with and avoiding strikes by a man, now clarified to be Rashad Bobino, a former Football player of the Texas Longhorns. Bobino as you can see in the video, violently assaulted a woman. Bobino is soon taken down by the lightweight and finished off with a few strikes. This is all factual and comes from proven sources. Before July 31st I held Huerta in high regards…..now I put him on a pedestal. I’ve heard lots of rebuttal on this issue from people saying that Huerta’s response was uncalled for and unprofessional. Honestly I can’t understand that logic. In society its been established as a golden rule, if your a guy you NEVER lay a hand on a woman! To all the people who feel that charges should be filed on Huerta I can’t help but laugh. The man avenged a lady in distress in the state of TEXAS! I guess it just goes to show that some people will argue just for the sake of arguing. All in all I believe Bobino got what he deserved. Huerta stepped in when no one else would and reminded us all that chivalry is not dead!

P.S. Eddie Alvarez stands a chance against Huerta in October if he can keep his hands off the ladies till then 🙂
